Measuring your kitchen or bath is the first step to getting cabinets. To measure the space you plan to install cabinets in, you'll need to get a sheet of graph paper, preferably four squares to the inch, and a tape measure.
Measure the overall length of the walls pertinent to the design beginning in the left corner and moving to the right. Note these figures and draw the walls to scale on the graph paper with each square = 3".
Measure from the left corner to the edge of the first opening or item on the wall. Items include windows, electrical outlets, and wall switches, doors, appliances, sinks, water and gas lines, etc. Measure across openings from outside to outside of the opening, including trim pieces. Continue measuring from the outside of the opening to the next item on the wall until you reach the far wall. Add up the figures. They should equal the figure you arrived at in step in 1. If they don't, remeasure to find the discrepancy.
Measure the pertinent walls and obstacles on the walls as you did in Step 2, and note these figures on the graph paper.
Measure all windows from the floor to the windowsill, and from the sill to the top of the window, and finally, from the top of the window to the ceiling. Add these figures together, then measure the overall height of the wall. These should match. Note these dimensions on your plan.
Measure the width of each door, from outside to outside trim. Indicate which sides the hinges are on, and how the door swings.
Measure each appliance height, width, and depth, and list them on a separate sheet. Note each brand and model as well.
Double-check all measurements. An inaccurate measurement is easy to make and can drastically affect the overall layout.
Call and make an appointment to meet with a designer who will help you select the style you want and work up a price quote from your drawing. With these steps we can provide you with a quote for your cabinets easier and more accurately.
